Lanka Ablaze

The Monkey stood before the wicked king;
in praise of Lord Ram did the Monkey sing.
A humble messenger of his Lord was he,
who came to warn this king to set Sita free.

"The wicked from justice can never escape!"
Thus warned the divine and wise Ape.
"Oh Demon-King, amend your ways!
Or else prepare to count your days!"

The mighty king was outraged at this.
"Set fire that tail of his!"
How dare this creature into my city storm
and threaten me (having caused enough harm)!

The tail which they set on fire,
swung right back and lit their pyre!
Across the city did the Vanara chase.
Lo! For Lanka was now ablaze!

Shiva

Oh King of Dancers, who's art doth charm,

May thy music forever play on!

For thy mystic dance steers away all harm,

and guides lost souls from dusk to dawn!

Upon mount Kailash is thy abode;

where thou doth meditate in peace.

To Him alone I dedicate this ode,

who's grace puts all souls at ease.

Oh God of Gods, I surrender to thou!

Help me embrace my karma today!

Let dharma be my unbroken vow;

and sins thy Third Eye burn away!

The Blessed Ash covers thy skin,

like the shadow which covers the night!

Conquerer of Death! Fill my soul within,

and guide me with thy blessed light!

Om namah shivaya!

Note:

1. Nataraja (King of Dancers), Mahadev (Great God or God or Gods), Mrityunjaya (Conqueror of Death) are various names of Lord Shiva.
2.  Karma = purpose, action
3. Dharma = justice, duty
4. For those who lack awareness about Indian Mythology,  Shiva loves to dance, meditate, and cover himself with funeral ash. He resides at the top of Mount Kailash and posses a third eye on his forehead, which if opened could destroy ... not necessarily the human being, but the ego. Hence Shiva is not merely a destroyer, as most ignorant people assume. He is a destroyer of the arrogance/ego within us, and this helps remove one's sufferings.

The Mahabharatha – A Few Lines

The principles of Bhishma brought many a woe.

And the blindness of Dhritarashtra, even so.

But Lord Krishna’s mischief and Shakuni’s conspiracy,

engineered the most deadly battle of all eternity.

The test of the just to the end of the unjust;

where  brothers fought brothers, great men reduced to dust.

Thus on the plains of Kuru was fought

the epic battle which time never forgot…

Part 4 - The Negotiation

This is a continuation of Part 3 - The Serpent

Earth would have been paradise...Alas! To keep God’s only word Man failed.
Thus for thousands of years and thousands more, evil on earth prevailed.
While the righteous hid from persecution, the sinful earth did rot.
But though Man had forgotten his Creator’s love, the Creator never forgot.

“Oh Lucifer, why did you of all choose a path so unwise?

Your desire for praise and wicked ways expelled you from Paradise.”

“I shall return this earth to you,” the sly Devil said. “if you give me your Son.”
“Amen!” The Lord said and with that the deal was done.
The Devil expected this not, but with this he was content.
To avenge the day the first Man was born was his malicious intent.

Thus God sent His own Son, who was born to the Virgin Mary.
Only he and the Lord knew the burden he would someday carry.

Second Thoughts on the Battlefield

Note: For those who do not know/understand the story of the Mahabharath, please refer to my narration.

How could I ever do this, Kanha? It's such a miserable deed!
I would rather run away, and live with only what I need.
I would rather surrender wealth, power, joy and fame
than ever slay my dear ones and live all my life in shame.

If this is my duty and true joy, I see why you equate sorrow and glee.
If defeat and victory don't differ, Krishna, I would now rather flee.
You say that I have a mission from which I cannot stray.
Then may I put this war aside and fight it another day?

How could I carry this burden and yet keep a smile upon my face?
How could I accept this misery, taking it to be your grace?
You have provided better to the lesser; is this all MY life comes to?
I give up, oh Keshava! Tell me what could I do?
